Ontarians Not Fooled by April's Job Figures

Ontarians Not Fooled by April?s Job Figures

PC Economic Development Critic says manufacturing sector still in sharp decline

?There is no good news for Ontarians when good-paying manufacturing jobs are replaced with those paying minimum wage.  The creation of minimum wage jobs does nothing to generate tax dollars or economic growth, both of which are sadly lacking in Dalton McGuinty?s Ontario,? Shurman said.

?This week the Premier said that reality is our friend.  When the stark reality is that Ontario?s unemployment rate remains stuck at 8.8% and the manufacturing sector continues to shed precious jobs, it?s time Dalton McGuinty started looking for some new companions,? stated Peter Shurman.

A Tale of Two Thornhills

Tale of Two Thornhills

It's "part luck, part on purpose", suggests Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman.

Mr. Shurman compares Thornhill, Ontario to a "crucible in a big chemistry experiment". With 150 different ethnicities and 120 languages spoken, this experiment worked, he says, because of a well thought-out approach to immigration.

"England has been monolithic for a number of years, and the influx of immigrants is relatively recent," he says. "Growth here has happened slowly enough, and with the good grace on all sides, and tolerance and awareness that differences don't have to be discarded."

Thornhill Residents surprised by HST over the weekend

Thornhill Residents Hit By Surprise Implementation of the HST this Past Weekend

Peter Shurman, MPP for Thornhill and PC Critic for Economic Development and Trade asked, ?McGuinty refused to hold public debate on the HST and now he surprises us with this early implementation of the HST? Do the McGuinty Liberals really think they can get away with this sneak attack on Thornhill families and seniors??

?This latest rate increase combined with the HST and other hidden fees will add $350 to the average family?s annual electricity bill by the end of next year.  There is just no end in sight to the McGuinty Liberals? assault on the pocketbooks of Ontario families and seniors? Shurman said.

She spoke of voting in favour of Shurman?s Private Members? resolution to the Ontario Legislature, which condemned Israeli Apartheid Week.

?Although I?m the daughter of an Italian immigrant, since that day in the legislature I?ve felt a little bit Jewish and a little bit Israeli. I?ll tell you why: because I had a death threat come into my house (and) because I?ve been called all manner of names. It gave me a sense and it gave me a bit of the experience of what you?ve been through, both as a nation and as a people. So I can say with a little bit more solidity and with a little bit more foundation now, shalom and mazel tov again. I look forward to the day that Peter talks about when I can go and see Israel for myself and kiss that ground that is sacred to all of us.?

Shurman snubbed over trade mission

PC MPP feels "snubbed" over trade trip
By Kim Zarzour - Thornhill Liberal

"I would have expected the Premier to understand that many Thornhill constituents are very concerned about Israel and further, have a special interest in strengthening the economic ties between Ontario an Israel."

"When PC Premier Mike Harris traveled to Israel in 1998, Liberal MPP Monte Kwinter was included in the trade mission. I cannot understand why Dalton McGuinty would play partisan politics with a matter that is of interest to the entire Jewish community in Ontario."

?I represent the highest concentration of Jewish people in the province, arguably in the country, up in Thornhill,? said Shurman.

?There?s no question that the government has chosen wisely to do a trade mission to Israel,? Sherman continued. ?In the 1990?s when our party was in power and the Premier was Mike Harris, he also did a government trade mission to Israel. Monte Kwinter, a Liberal, was on the invitation list. He didn?t go in the end, but he was invited. I wasn?t invited, I was pointedly uninvited.?...

Peter Shurman, MPP tackles litter during the Vaughan 20 Minute Makeover

Mr. Shurman noted, "While litter in Thornhill has become an issue, we can all do our part to make a difference. I am delighted that we, the older generation, can take a cue from youth like those around me today on how to make that difference."

"Most people talk a big game when they say that they will be more environmentally conscious, but today, during the 20 minute makeover, no one has an excuse to walk by litter; everybody can tidy up around them during the lunch break." Shurman said.

Shurman said. ?I am deeply disappointed on behalf of my Thornhill constituents that Dalton McGuinty has denied them the opportunity to have their elected representative share those concerns and interests with the people of Israel.?

?I cannot understand why Dalton McGuinty would play partisan politics with a matter that is of interest to the entire Jewish community in Ontario,? Shurman said. ?I think it?s disgraceful.?
