Budget Definitely not a Bestseller with Ontarians

McGuinty?s Fictional Budget Definitely Not a Bestseller with Ontarians
Thornhill MPP says growth of crippling debt and lack of job creation are real facts of 2010 Budget

?This budget is an insult to hard-working families in Thornhill who are struggling to make ends meet.  It is very clear the McGuinty government is not prepared to make the same sacrifices that families and businesses have been making since the recession hit.  Thornhill residents deserve better than to see their government continue with the same high taxes and reckless spending that is failing to create jobs today and will saddle our children and grandchildren with a massive debt for years to come,? said Shurman.

?This budget was an opportunity to take a bold new path to job creation and spending  restraint.  McGuinty took the easy road, rather than the high road,? stated Shurman.

Peter Shurman demands, 'Minister tell Ontarians the whole story'

Study Shows Liberal Green Energy Act Will Cost Ontario Jobs
PC Economic Development Critic says Minister is not telling the whole story

?Clearly the Minister doesn?t want to tell Ontarians the whole story.  The Minister knows all about the March 2009 university study on the impact of Spain?s green energy policy, which George Smitherman hailed as a global leader.  That study concluded that for every one green job created, 2.2 jobs were lost in Spain?s economy.?

?So, Minister, it really doesn?t matter if you pick a number of 1,400, 16,000 or 50,000.  It?s always going to mean net job losses for Ontario.  Minister, stop blowing green smoke at Ontarians and tell them honestly how many jobs are going to disappear,? Shurman demanded.

Shurman: 'I'd do this Again in a New York Minute'

"I'd do this Again in a New York Minute"

By: DAN VERBIN
Published: March 17th 2010

?It?s remarkable,? Shurman told Shalom Life. He said that obscure blogs he has never heard of before are ?calling me every name under the sun.?

?The premise of the resolution was that your freedom of speech can never trump mine. That?s the essence of our country.? he said. ?When you say Israeli Apartheid Week, you curtail my ability to speak to that because you?ve already decided. That?s what (my resolution) was talking about. I could not debate the peace process in 12 minutes. I think I successfully debated an issue that effects publicly funded campuses in Ontario.? He said that security at Queen?s Park has vetted the emails to make sure that he is not in danger.

?I?ve received support from all my colleagues in the PC caucus, including today,? he said, noting that the rest of the Legislature is also supportive of him.

?The fact that she?s the one who?s apparently getting the death threats speaks to people who feel that her NDP affiliation has somehow been betrayed by the positions she took. I think nothing could be further from the truth,? said Shurman.

?DiNovo?s debate to the resolution was from all points of view quite benign,? Shurman said. ?What she talked about was trying to find a way for us all to live in peace with each other even though we have opposing views. She tried to address the central theme of the resolution which was if we sit down and talk about our differences in a respectful way then maybe we can find some resolutions.?

IAW motions sparks tensions - Shurman responds

Hate mail over Israel motion fills MPP inbox
March 16, 2010

Robert Benzie - Toronto Star

The motion received coverage in newspapers in Canada, the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Slews of bloggers also picked up the story.

"I've had many congratulatory emails, but, sad to say, most of the emails have not (been kind). I'm getting very ugly emails," said Shurman, a former CFRB talk show host.

"That's too bad because what DiNovo ... was doing is what DiNovo has consistently done, which is she was preaching peace," he said.

"She preaches peace, she preaches a non-violent (approach) and I say `preaches' because she does it in a ministerial way, which she is.

"Forget about me being a Conservative or her being an NDP member or Liberals, what was being said (on Feb. 25 in the House) was, in a respectful way, you try to iron out your differences," Shurman said.

Throne speech has many holes

..."It's more about what's not there that bothers us. Past speeches from the throne failed to mention health tax or HST. You start to wonder ... what's in store for us next?" Mr. Shurman said.

..."There's nothing in this speech about controlling spending. One wonders about the urgency assigned to this deficit by a government that created it. As for the new projects announced in the speech, there's not enough detail to get your head around," Mr. Shurman added.

..."Emergency departments are designed for immediate trauma and disease treatment, not for managing ongoing acute care, but York Central, like most hospitals, is hard-pressed to do anything about that. The Liberals talk about solving the problem, but they haven't presented anything viable," Mr. Shurman added.

Thornhill MPP says economic recovery far from Ontario?s horizon

?With Ontario?s unemployment rate remaining unchanged in February, Ontario?s economy remains sluggish. Just ask the over 500 people who are losing their jobs at the Siemens plant in Hamilton,? said Shurman.

?The loss of good paying jobs for these 500 Ontario families is yet another result of Dalton McGuinty?s failure to create a business climate in Ontario that is friendly to employers.  We in the PC Caucus believe that the best way to create and sustain good private sector jobs is to make Ontario a place where businesses want to locate and take advantage of a good labour force.  Companies, like Siemens, are not prepared to do that because of the unattractive conditions created by this Premier.  No one said that economic recovery was easy. So you have to wonder why Dalton McGuinty would make it that much harder.? Shurman concluded.

D?put?

Shurman questions why the government would rather help out foreign companies than Ontario firms

McGuinty Liberals Leave Northern Ontario Families Hanging
Minister Gravelle again dodges PC Critic?s Plea for Grant Forest Products

...?Despite the promise in Monday?s Throne Speech to support Northern families, the 1,500 families in Englehart and Timmins who are relying on the Minister?s decision aren?t feeling that support,? said Shurman.

...?It?s D-Day for Grant Forest Products, the 1,500 families and the communities they live in and yet the Minister is still sitting on his proverbial Ring of Fire.  Will the Minister give Grant Forest Products a loan guarantee, or won?t he?? questioned Shurman.

Shurman illustrates McGuinty's damage to Ontario

'Ontario can lead again,' says Hudak
By ALTHIA RAJ, QMI AGENCY - Toronto Sun

Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman said a key feature would be private-sector job creation and ways to enable small and medium-size businesses to thrive.

?The McGuinty Liberals through high taxes on new investment, red tape, regulations have made the business environment in Ontario unattractive to new businesses and to investors,? he said.
