By Online  Wednesday, June 16, 2010

“The HST is not just a new sales tax, it is a new gas tax that will cost a two-car family $246 a year.  Each time you fill your tank, Dalton McGuinty will have his hand in your pocket.”—Peter Shurman, Ontario PC MPP for Thornhill

"It's pretty obvious to any onlooker and I think to any Ontarian, that when you are dealing with taxpayers' money ? which is not your money, it is taxpayers' money ? you have to be careful," said Peter Shurman, a Progressive Conservative member of the legislature.

"This has been a wonderful event," noted Peter Shurman, MPP for Thornhill. "You know, the amazing thing about the Iranian community here in the GTA is that they've meshed in so well with Canadian society, they're educated, they're active, and they know how to celebrate life. And this initiative has been a testament to that."

Shurman noted, "I have been a fan of Prager?s which made it even more of a thrill for me to introduce him.? Both Shurman and Prager had the opportunity to meet and visit with the guests during the cocktail reception, held at the Riviera Parque Dining, Banquet and Convention Centre.  All were happy to honour this year?s recipients, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Dr. Dan Farine for their tireless dedication to community service.

"Speakers like Prager offer real insight into current affairs and offer plausible solutions," stated Shurman.   Shurman added, ?It seemed fitting to have Dennis speak as we honoured two men who have done so much to help the community.?

Thornhill Seniors Lose Big, Thanks to Dalton McGuinty?s HST

?The HST is a tax on seniors, their financial security and their peace of mind.  Only Dalton McGuinty could be so out-of-touch that he would force seniors to pay for his spending addiction.?
-- Peter Shurman, Thornhill MPP

?Our seniors have worked hard their entire lives and many now live on fixed incomes.  Instead of being punished by Dalton McGuinty?s HST, they deserve a real break.?

Major Transit Delays Broken Promises Says Shurman

Major transit delay

By David Fleischer and Chris Traber
May 20, 2010

Conservative Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman disagreed.

?No, it?s broken promises,?  he said. ?I submit that the Liberal McGuinty government?s priority agenda is not York Region oriented. Just because you?ve made a mess of things, you don?t decide to pull the rug out.?
Pushing back the second phase will prolong hardships, he said.

?It means people will spend more hours, days, weeks and months in their cars,? Mr. Shurman said. ?It impacts on quality of life and the economy. It keeps people from their families and their jobs. Keeping people from work means less efficiencies.?

The delay shouldn?t be blamed on Metrolinx, he noted. Rather, it?s symptomatic of who?s controlling the purse strings.

?It?s about the government and how it ranks the 905 in its system,? Mr. Shurman said. ?We?re the fastest growing region yet we?re the poor cousin in terms of per capita allocation for children?s mental health and support to children?s aid. Now it?s rapid mass transit. It?s just wrong headed.?
