McGuinty Liberals Leave Northern Ontario Families Hanging
Minister Gravelle again dodges PC Critic?s Plea for Grant Forest Products
(Queen?s Park) ? In Question Period today, Thornhill MPP and PC Critic for Economic Development and Trade, Peter Shurman again grilled the Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry about the McGuinty government?s refusal to provide loan guarantees to Grant Forest Products.
?Despite the promise in Monday?s Throne Speech to support Northern families, the 1,500 families in Englehart and Timmins who are relying on the Minister?s decision aren?t feeling that support,? said Shurman.
Shurman again reminded the Minister that any day now, a bankruptcy court will make a decision as to who will buy the assets of this historic made in Ontario business. Shurman demanded that the Minister intervene now in order to save the 1,500 jobs that will likely disappear if the court accepts the bid from U.S. Georgia Pacific. Despite a third day of questions from Shurman, the Minister would not commit to saving these jobs.
?It?s D-Day for Grant Forest Products, the 1,500 families and the communities they live in and yet the Minister is still sitting on his proverbial Ring of Fire. Will the Minister give Grant Forest Products a loan guarantee, or won?t he?? questioned Shurman.
