Peter Shurman Honoured at Spirit of Community Gala
Shurman's years of community service recognized by the community
(Thornhill) - This evening, over 700 people from the Israeli, Jewish, Italian and Persian communities came together to support the Beth Chabad Israeli Community Centre and to honour community service. The Spirit of Community gala is held annually to single out those who have demonstrated outstanding community spirit. This year, Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman, Tony Di Battista and the Klasner Family received achievement awards for community service.
"The Spirit of Community is alive and well here tonight," Shurman proclaimed to a lively and captivated audience. "Community is something that I think about everyday when I'm either at Queen's Park or at my constituency office in Thornhill. Community is what politics is all about and this is often misunderstood. I hear from residents of Thornhill on a daily basis of the great things taking place right here and I am truly humbled that I have the privilege to represent a riding that has taken community spirit and commitment to a new level. It is something we should all applaud," he said.
The proceeds from the Spirit of Community Dinner go to the Beth Chabad Israeli Community Centre in Thornhill. Beth Chabad helps new Israeli immigrants settle in Ontario by offering language services, community care and the like. These services could never be offered without the generous support of donors.
Rabbi Landa, the director of Beth Chabad Israeli Community Centre, noted that the three honourees are the reason that Beth Chabad is able to continue its work...they are leading by example.
