Largest number of monthly job losses since July 1st proves HST a job killer
(Queen’s Park) Today Thornhill MPP and PC Critic for Economic Development and Trade Peter Shurman said the evidence of the HST’s harmful impact on Ontario’s job market just keeps mounting. Statistics Canada figures released today revealed that in September, Ontario lost an astounding 23,000 jobs – the largest number since Dalton McGuinty implemented the HST on July 1st. Approximately 15,000 jobs were taken from Ontario families in July 2010.
“September’s job figures and spiking inflation rates are the indisputable facts behind Dalton McGuinty’s HST and his expensive energy experiments. Rising prices and unaffordable hydro bills are already stretching families’ budgets to the limit. The loss of 23,000 jobs in September just pushes Ontario families closer to the edge,” Shurman stated.
In August, Ontario’s inflation rate rose to 2.9% - the highest in Canada for the second month in a row. Comparatively, B.C. which also imposed the HST in July, saw a 1.5% increase in prices. A study by Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters estimates that Ontario hydro bills will increase by 41% by 2015.
“Ontario families see right through Dalton McGuinty’s empty promise of 600,000 jobs from the HST. Today’s job figures are 23,000 more reasons why three out of four Ontario families believe it’s time for a change at Queen’s Park,” Shurman said.
