(Thornhill) Today Progressive Conservative MPP Peter Shurman slammed the McGuinty Liberals, citing the Eastern Wire plant closure as yet another victim of McGuinty’s failed economic policies that are chasing good paying jobs from Thornhill.
On August 19th, Eastern Wire & Conduit, a division of Columbia-MBF Inc., announced that it is closing its Edgeley Boulevard facility in Concord in March 2011, putting approximately 23 people out of work.
“Dalton McGuinty’s tax and spend addiction is toxic to Ontario’s business environment. Strangled by the McGuinty government’s red tape and uncompetitive taxes and now facing sky-rocketing energy costs, is it any wonder that companies like Eastern Wire are shutting their doors and following the exit route taken by other Thornhill companies such as Crown Packaging, Canac Kitchens and Progressive Moulded?” asked Shurman.
Shurman was referring to the 2008 Thornhill closures of Canac Kitchens and Progressive Moulded that threw 3,000 people out of work. In April 2010, Crown Metal Packaging announced its Concord plant was closing in December, leaving another 159 people without jobs to support their families.
“Eastern Wire’s plant closure is yet another signal to voters that only a change in government in 2011 will stop the bleeding of good paying jobs in Thornhill,” Shurman said.
