SHURMAN CONGRATULATES YORK REGIONAL POLICE FOR TACKLING HATE CRIMES

Apr 8, 2009
APRIL 8, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Queen?s Park) Peter Shurman, MPP (Thornhill) and Progressive Conservative Critic for Citizenship and Immigration congratulated York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge on receiving an ?A? grade for his efforts in protecting the communities of York Region from hate crimes.

Shurman was responding to a ?report card? released by a group of activists who graded the performance of various government and enforcement agencies on the issue of attacks on Asian fishermen. The report card was released in the wake of an Ontario Human Rights Commission report made public on Tuesday afternoon. York Regional Police was the only institution among enforcement agencies, provincial ministries and local municipalities to earn an ?A?.

?It is frightening to hear about incidents of racially motivated attacks, wherever they occur. Such attacks are unacceptable, especially in Canada where we pride ourselves on respecting a diversity of cultures and ethnicities. I am proud of our York Regional Police for taking the necessary steps to ensure that all those wishing to enjoy the natural resources our region has to offer are able to do so,? said Shurman.

Shurman pointed out that his riding of Thornhill is the proud home of over 100 diverse communities that have found the right recipe for co-operation and economic success.

?I hope that the same spirit of collaboration, mutual respect and recognition will flourish in all the communities across Ontario,? Shurman concluded.
