Shurman to Liberals and NDP: ?It?s not about you!?

Jan 26, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 26, 2009

(Queen?s Park) -  Ontario PC MPP Peter Shurman (Thornhill) today blasted the McGuinty government for further jeopardizing the education of York University students by playing political games with the NDP.
?The heads that should?ve been banging are those of McGuinty and his Cabinet, back in November,? said Shurman following Question Period today. ?Premier McGuinty?s mismanagement first made the students pawns in the dispute between York University and CUPE 3903 and has now turned them into pawns in a political game between the Liberals and the NDP.?

Shurman has called for months on Premier McGuinty to introduce back-to-work legislation, to stand up for students who have been held hostage by the strike.  Instead, the Premier and his Ministers hid behind excuses and insisted on deploying a mediator, a strategy that has repeatedly failed in the course of the negotiations at York.

?Over the past 12 weeks Premier McGuinty?s priority was the rights of CUPE and not the rights of university students. His casual dismissal of the hardships and injustice that York U. students have been made to suffer does not bode well for U of T students who may be suffering the same circumstances shortly or the 300,000 students at universities across Ontario whose education may be disrupted by CUPE strikes in 2010. This is neither an education premier nor an education government,? Shurman concluded.
