York U. students cheer for Thornhill M.P.P.

Thornhill  Today Peter Shurman, M.P.P. (Thornhill) attended a rally organized by students opposed to the CUPE 3903 strike at York University. Shurman was greeted by cheers as he took the podium and enthusiastic applause as he told students he was there to support them and to take their message to the Ontario Legislature and the McGuinty government.

?This strike has deeply affected the life of this university and its students. Students of the York dance program who had a performance planned for next week were having a bake sale today to raise funds just so that they could hold their production. Others are afraid that they will have their summer employment plans ruined. All this sabotaged for the sake of what I can only call unreasonable union demands,? Shurman said.

Later in the day Shurman made a statement in the Ontario Legislature telling the McGuinty government that it was about time that students were put first and that striking employees returned to work.

?If binding arbitration will get the employees back to work ? let?s go for it. If we need to get back-to-work legislation, let?s get that done. It?s about time that this government got off the sidelines and spoke for the students who are bearing the brunt of this strike and who are being shunned by the union and its outrageous demands,? Shurman concluded.
