Premier McGuinty, put students first!: Shurman

Nov 18, 2008
For Immediate Release

November 18, 2008

(Queen?s Park)  Dalton McGuinty must take action on the York University strike, before it causes serious consequences for the education and academic futures of York University students, Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman warned today. ?The Premier must get involved and put an end to this strike, one way or another. Almost daily my office receives letters, calls and e-mails from concerned York U. students or their parents wondering what will happen to their education and future. Meanwhile, Premier McGuinty is still non-committal, and refuses to stand up for students on this issue,? Shurman said on Tuesday after Question Period.

Having attended an anti-strike rally organized by students at York University on Monday morning, and having heard first hand of the impact that the strike is having on them, the Progressive Conservative MPP is adamant that the strike must end immediately to avoid potentially catastrophic and long term consequences for students.

?Earlier today a constituent, whose daughters is supposed to graduate this year from York University and was planning to apply for a graduate program, called my office to ask what will happen if this strike drags on and prevents her daughter from submitting her final marks for admission to the graduate program on time. This is the real impact of this irresponsible strike; it can compromise a young woman?s entire future. How many other stories like this are out there? How many futures must be jeopardized before Premier McGuinty and his government take some decisive steps to end this strike?? Shurman asked.

?At the end of the day if this strike continues students will pay the highest price. Regardless of which side comes out on ?top?, students will have no cause for celebration. They will be left with a lost semester, missed opportunities and the knowledge that they were used for someone else?s gain. All on this government?s watch,? Shurman added.
