Thornhill Peter Shurman, Member of Provincial Parliament
(Thornhill) is calling on the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3903 to put an end to its strike at York University.
Calling the strike irresponsible, Shurman said that the demands of CUPE 3903 are unreasonable, especially in view of the current economic climate and a looming provincial deficit.
?At a time when we?ve lost more than 200,000 jobs, while Ontarians are going without pay and businesses are closing their doors, an 11 per cent raise over two years is an unreasonable and irresponsible demand,? Shurman said. ?What part of ?bad economy? does this union not understand??
Shurman criticized Ontario?s Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy for his lack of decisive action to end the strike and to support the 50,000 York University students whose academic year could be at risk.
?We can?t risk the strike dragging on and sabotaging our students? academic careers. My constituents in Thornhill are demanding action. The students who are looking forward to graduating should not be the victims of CUPE 3903?s out-of-touch demands,? said Shurman.
