(Thornhill) On July 2nd Peter Shurman, M.P.P. for Thornhill, met with a Scalabrini youth group at St. Paschal Baylon Church in Thornhill, a week before their departure for World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia. ?Thornhill is very proud of you,? Shurman told the group as he distributed Ontario pins to the participants to share with young people from other countries. ?As you travel to the other side of the globe to meet with youth of various nationalities and cultures, know that you are Canada?s representatives and Thornhill?s ambassadors to the world.? Shurman reminded the youth that over 145 languages are spoken in Thornhill and that Canada is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.
From July 15-20 over 20 youth ages 16-26 from St. Paschal Baylon in Thornhill and St. Catherine of Siene in Mississauga will participate in WYD08 in Sydney, Australia. Following the conclusion of WYD08, the group will travel to Brisbane where they will do community service at a seniors? residence and other parish community centres.
?This is an incredible group of young people who will have the opportunity to make memories of a lifetime as they celebrate their faith with youth from around the world,? said Shurman. ?Toronto?s World Youth Day in 2002 was an incredible experience for hundreds of thousands of people, and I am very happy that this group will also have the chance to experience a truly magnificent event. I wish them many spectacular moments and a safe return home.?
