Blog Entry - June 19, 2008

Jun 19, 2008

The Legislative Assembly has now recessed for the summer.  It won?t sit again now until September 22.  So, what has the McGuinty government done on your behalf?  Not much.

Since coming back into power after the autumn 2007 election, the McGuinty Liberals have spent much of their time focused on issues that amount to little more than government PR. A popular legislative tool of the McGuinty nanny-statists has been to enact bans. In fact, since autumn, seven bans have either come into effect or have been passed by the Liberals.

Here?s a list of those bans:

  • No transfats
  • No smoking in cars with kids present
  • No cosmetic pesticides
  • No displays of cigarettes in convenience stores
  • No speeding in commercial trucks
  • No transporting illegal firearms in cars
  • No municipal bans on clothes lines

In addition to this, there is a Liberal Private Members? Bill attempting to ban the use of tanning beds by people under 19! Someone could sign up to fight for Canada in Afghanistan, but heaven forbid they go to a tanning salon prior to deployment!

Rather than addressing issues of vital importance to Ontarians, such as our economy, health care, the environment or transportation, the Liberals have focused on bans and fluff legislation like the Apology Act, the Great Lakes Shoreline Right of Passage Act, and legislation regarding signage in Niagara Parks properties. Not much to show at all considering the majority the McGuinty nanny-statists enjoy.

Ontarians deserve a government that will actually work for them. It is my sincere hope that when the Legislature resumes we can see some real governance with real results from the McGuinty Liberals. I fear, however, that what we will see is more of the same drudgery from a government that is absolutely bereft of ideas and direction. I hope, for the sake of my Thornhill constituents and Ontarians everywhere, that I am wrong.

On a positive note, my Thornhill constituency office continues to be a hive of activity helping Thornhill residents on a variety of concerns ranging from obtaining birth certificates to assistance with passports. I have enjoyed the opportunity to become personally involved in particularly sensitive issues, facilitating matters for my constituents.

The Thornhill constituency office staff members are very highly trained and are all extremely capable people who are ready to assist you with whatever problems you may have.  The office does not close for the summer and can be reached at 905-731-8462.
