Tories' tax relief bill defeated - Sudbury Star (May 31)

Jun 2, 2008
Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci skipped the vote for a bill that would have provided relief for low-income seniors and disabled persons struggling with skyrocketing property taxes, states a press release from Progressive Conservative MPP Peter Shurman

Shurman's Bill 78 was supported by the PCs and the NDP, but all the Liberal members present voted to defeat it.

"Bill 78 would have provided thousands of dollars in property tax relief annually to low income seniors and disabled persons," Shurman stated. "Contrast that with the meagre $250 proposed by the Liberals. This fall, the property assessment freeze will be lifted and property owners across Ontario will be hit with three years worth of increases.

"This was a win-win proposal. The only conclusion to be drawn from this was that the Liberal caucus defeated Bill 78 because it was not a Liberal bill."
