Bill 78 For Seniors Shot Down at Queen's Park - 790 CIGM Sudbury (May 30,2008)

May 30, 2008

The M-P-P from Thornhill says it's a sad day in Ontario when political parties can't work together to pass what he calls a "good piece of legislation".

The second reading of Peter Shurman's private members bill, Bill 78, was debated and then defeated at Queen's Park yesterday.

It would have given property tax relief to seniors on a fixed income and disabled Ontarians.

There was full support from the Conservatives, NDP and some backbench Liberals, but by a "whipped" or forced vote it was defeated.

Sudbury's M-P-P, Rick Bartolucci wasn't present in the house and Shurman feels he failed our local seniors by not voting on the bill.

Shurman claims the legislation was shot down because it wasn't written by members of the Liberal party.

He expects something similar to come from the Liberal party in several months time.
