27, 2008 (Queen?s Park) Peter Shurman, MPP for Thornhill, wants to know
how sex change operations found their way to the top of the priority list for
OHIP funding while MPPs were in their ridings for ?Constituency Week?.
?This is the same
Liberal government that stopped funding for eye exams, physiotherapy and
chiropractic care, and the same Premier who in 2004 said funding for sex change
surgery was not a priority,? Shurman said.
In a statement to the
Ontario Legislature yesterday, Shurman said that Health Minister George
Smitherman surprised even his own Liberal caucus colleagues when he announced
that taxpayer money will fund sex change surgery.
?The people of this
province deserve an explanation of exactly how sex change surgery rose to the
top of the health care priority list. Who made this decision and why?? Shurman
asked.
