Vaughan Corporate Centre Subway Petition

Jan 17, 2008

Dear Constituents:

As the MPP for Thornhill, I am working hard to hold the McGuinty government to account.  I am fighting for them to follow through on their 2006 announcement for funding to allow Toronto and York Region to extend the subway to the Vaughan Corporate Centre at Highway 7.

The Government predicts the population of the Golden Horseshoe will expand by over 3 million people in the next 20 years. It is imperative that the infrastructure is in place to sensibly and efficiently accommodate the needs of these expected new residents and current residents.

The provincial government?s ?Move Ontario 2020? plan calls for the development of 52 rapid transit projects across the GTA.  It has tasked the Greater Toronto Transit Authority with formulating a report for 2008 on their vision of the future of public transportation in the region.  While I agree on the value of long-term planning, I believe the government?s goal of having these projects completed by 2020 does not reflect the immediacy of the problem.  I believe action needs to be taken once Metrolinx?s (new name for the Greater Toronto Transit Authority) report has been received and its recommendations considered.

Thornhill and all of York Region need and deserve predictable provincial funding for infrastructure. Without it, we cannot access federal infrastructure dollars.

I trust you will add your name to the following petition and support my efforts in the fight for better transit infrastructure in Thornhill. Following you will find a petition for consideration.

Sincerely,

Peter Shurman
